An upcoming fundraiser for Cyrus Centre will bring backpacks filled with basic essentials to homeless youth in Chilliwack.
The inaugural Totes for Teens Hygiene Drive is set for Saturday, Sept. 25.
The community can donate items such as hair care products, body care products, toiletries and other basic necessities to help fill backpacks for local teens. Cash donations are also accepted.
The goal is to provide more than 100 youth with a basic care backpack full of hygiene products and basic necessities.
In Canada, one in five people experiencing homelessness is a youth age 13 to 24, according to a national survey by the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness.
Totes for Teens aims to raise awareness about local youth homelessness while raising funds and collecting donations to provide basic essentials to the youth at Chilliwack Cyrus Centre.
The hygiene drive runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot across from Cyrus Centre (on Wellington Avenue at College Street). Additionally, donations can be dropped off to Payton and Buckle (45930 Wellington Ave.) starting Sept. 9.
There will also be three local food trucks on site: Groovin Grill, the Stó:lō Bannock Wagon and Barking Irons Roastery. Swag from local businesses will be handed out that day.
