The pandemic has changed life for everyone, in small and big ways.

And that’s definitely true for those living in senior housing, says Tracey McDonald, lifestyle and programs manager for Chartwell Hampton House in Chilliwack.

But when life hands you lemons, McDonald says you have to make lemonade — and banana splits, too. She decided to start Freaky Fridays for her residents, with each week having a theme.

“I’ve had to reinvent the wheel,” she says. “I just kept thinking, everyone needs something to look forward to, and now they do.”

The themes start on Monday with decor changes, fun menu items, and even photo sessions that get printed off and sent to family members to keep everyone connected. Last Friday, they wore yellow and enjoyed banana splits for National Banana Split Day.

“We’ve been having so much fun,” she says.
