A Chilliwack teacher is one of seven across Canada who won a contest recognizing educators.

Leticia Bonney, a Grade 5 teacher at Central Elementary Community School, won the We Love Teachers contest put on by Staples.

“The receiving of this gift was a surprise as I am someone who does my job for the love of it and the continuous learning from students and colleagues,” she said.

In a press release, Bonney was referred to as a “remarkable educator and pillar in the community.”

According to a recent survey conducted by Angus Reid, nearly all teachers spend out of pocket for classroom supplies, with a spend that ranges from $300 to $500, the release stated.

As a winner of the We Love Teachers contest, Bonney will receive a $1,000 Staples gift card for her classroom, and a $500 Reitmans gift card for herself. The person who nominated her will get a $100 Staples gift card.

“I appreciate being recognized and look forward to incorporating new things into my teaching and classroom,” she said. “I am looking into items that can be used for my classroom that would help illustrate the learning of the students in various ways such as hands-on learning or technology.”

Throughout the month of August, parents, students and fellow educators across Canada were encouraged to nominate a teacher in their community who’s making an impact.

Bonney was the only winner from B.C. There were three from Ontario, two from Alberta and one from Quebec.

“Teachers are the heart of education, and we know how much they do for their students,” said David Boone, CEO of Staples Canada. “That’s why We Love Teachers is so important to us, it’s our way of giving back, acknowledging all they do and celebrating their efforts. As a true partner, we’re here to support educators not just when they’re setting up their classrooms, but throughout the year.”
