The Timberwood Young Guns captured the Chilliwack Men’s Soccer League championship last Saturday, defeating Old Settler FC by a 5-3 score in the final at Tzeachten Sportsfield.
The match started well for Old Settler when Matt Aikema hammered a top corner shot off a pass from Zane MacDonald in the 15th minute.
But the Young Guns replied with four unanswered goals — two by Kasper Van Woudenberg, singles from Ivan Lindhout and Marty Lindhout – to lead 4-1 at the half.
Kevin Denbok scored the fifth Young Guns goal early in the second half, and Old Settler lost a player to a red card soon after.
Despite playing the rest of the game with 10 men, they made a match of it in the closing minutes, getting a pair of penalty kick goals off the foot of Brenden Gillespie.
With the win the Young Guns secured the triple crown. They also won the season-opening Darcy Pedler Tournament and went undefeated in regular season play to claim the league championship.
After the match, the league presented individual player awards to Golden Boot (top goal scorer) winner Alex Leiper (Veto FC - 26 goals), Golden Glove (top goalkeeper) winner Jon Vugteveen (Young Guns - five clean sheets) and Referee of the Year Mark Budda (as voted by the teams).
