Yale senior girls AAA rugby team wins provincial title for second time in Abbotsford

Girls win final match 41-0 against Coquitlam Gleneagles at end of four-day tournament

They did it again.

Yale Secondary’s AAA girls rugby team took home the trophy in the BC provincials over weekend. They won their final game Saturday 41-0 over Coquitlam’s Gleaneagles.

The 2023 BC School Sports Rugby Provincial Championships were held at Abbotsford Exhibition Park from May 31 to June 3, with boys and girls high school teams arriving from around the province.

The Yale Lions senior girls won the first-ever provincial rugby title for the school in 2022, defeating Carson Graham 45-12, and were ranked first heading into this week’s tournament.

Heading into this year’s finals, the Yale girls were victorious against Mt. Boucherie 77-7 on Wednesday and then 49-10 against Lake City in the semifinals.

Yale’s AAA senior boys were ranked fifth heading into the provincials and placed eighth after losing 34-28 to Claremont on Saturday.

The team started off with a 48-0 loss to Oak Bay on Wednesday, followed by a 20-15 defeat to Mt. Boucherie on Friday in the consolation round.

St. George’s won the boys senior AAA title 20-14 against Shawnigan Lake.

Meanwhile, in Tier 2 action, the Abbotsford Senior Secondary’s AAA boys team placed third after a 27-19 victory over Kitsilano in the bronze-medal match. The squad lost 10-4 to Mountain Secondary in the semifinals.

The Tier 2 AAA boys championship was won by R.E. Mountain, which defeated Kelowna 31-28.

In another bronze-medal match, the fourth-ranked Robert Bateman AA senior boys finished fourth in a nailbiter against Charles Tupper, with a final score of 20-17.

The team edged past fifth-ranked Brentwood 35-31 on Wednesday, but then lost 39-7 Collingwood in the semifinals on Thursday.

The AA senior boys championship was claimed by Collingwood with a 43-5 win over Earl Marriott.

The Abbotsford Senior AA girls won their bronze-medal game 24-7 against Mark R. Isfeld after clinching their first game 50-0 against LV Rogers and being defeated 77-0 against Shawnigan Lake on Thursday in the semifinals.

Shawnigan Lake won the division with a 22-5 victory over D. W. Poppy.

The junior boys team from Bateman placed fifth, winning 33-19 over Kelowna in their final match.
