University of the Fraser Valley baseball coach Wes Darvill helped power Canada to a 5-1 win over Panama Tuesday at a Pan Am Games qualification tournament in Brazil.

With Canada trailing 1-0 in the sixth inning, the infielder came to the plate and launched a solo shot over the right field wall to tie the score. Teammate Daniel Pinero (Toronto) followed with a double and came around to score the go-ahead run on a wild pitch, and Canada came out of the inning leading 4-1.

Langley’s Kellin Deglan tacked on a solo shot in the eighth inning and Vancouver native Scott Richmond pitched five solid innings for the win.

The eight-team field in this tournament includes Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic.

The top four teams in the tourney will qualify for the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.

Canada took on Colombia Thursday (after Progress press deadlines). Semi-final games are slated for tomorrow (Saturday) with the bronze and gold medal games on Sunday.
