‘Unprecedented’ may have been the buzz word in all aspects due to the pandemic for 2020, but the word for 2021 may be ‘inevitable’, for all aspects of regular life, including sporting events.
Victoria was to host the 55+ BC Games in September 2021, but the annual multi-sport event is destined to take place a year later, still in Victoria, dates tentatively set for Sept. 13-17, 2022.
The recent decision to cancel the 2021 Games came due to continued concerns for participant and public safety due to COVID-19, based on governing health departments.
In the mean-time, Zone 2 Vancouver Island North board members have been keeping in touch through regular Zoom meetings and encouraging each other to keep active through these times. As a group effort, each board member is tracking their activity and fitness goals per week, and coming together with some impressive numbers for minutes, steps, and distances.
Zone 2 officials encourage all athletes to keep moving, keep training, and keep motivated. A good model for anyone to follow, 18 to 64 years of age, is through the Canada Physical Activity Guidelines to achieve health benefits. A total of 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity of aerobic activity per week, in bouts of 10 minutes or more per time, is encouraged. Those older than 64 can aim for 100 minutes per week. Seasoned and trained athletes of all ages can easily exceed these numbers in controlled training environments with respect to individuals’ limits and capabilities, and always with your physician’s approval.
