UFV men’s soccer team signs striker from Chilliwack and winger from Germany

Roland Mansell and Kevin Mainland join Cascades for 2023-24 season

The University of the Fraser Valley men’s soccer team has added a pair of key offensive pieces, as they announce the signing of striker Roland Mansell and winger Kevin Mailand for 2023.

Mansell is graduating from G. W. Graham secondary in Chilliwack.

UFV head coach Tom Lowndes says the six-foot-three striker will add add size and physicality up front for the Cascades.

“Roland is a player that we believe can help contribute to our attacking force for this season,” Lowndes said.

“He is a big, strong, physical player who can be a real handful for defenders. I am excited to see him transition to Canada West Soccer and be an important member of our program for this season and the years to come.”

Mansell said his goal is to win Canada West, elevate his game to the next level, and get drafted into the Canadian Premier League.

“I chose UFV because it’s a great program. The coach believed in me and has given me the chance to show my skills,” he said.

Mailand is a six-foot winger from Hannover, Germany.

The top scorer for HSC Hannover U19, Mailand will become the third German-born player on the Cascades, joining current team captain Nicolas Burret and defender Kadir Yagci.

“I chose UFV because it’s a great place to play soccer and get a good education,” Mailand said. “I’m looking forward to having a great time and a great season with the team.”

Lowndes said Mailand will provide an instant boost to the team’s offence.

“Kevin is a dynamic attacking talent who I believe will make an immediate impact on our squad. He is a strong one-on-one attacker who can create quality opportunities in the final third. He has the unique ability to see a creative pass and has an eye for goal as well,” he said.

The Cascades kick off their 2023 season beginning in August.
