Another University of the Fraser Valley baseball star has signed to play summer ball on the prairies.

Pitcher Evan Petersen will join the Western Major Baseball League’s Fort McMurray Giants for a season that runs from late May through late July plus playoffs.

The WMBL is a 12 team circuit that includes teams in Alberta and Saskatchewan. The Giants are joined by the Edmonton Prospects, Brooks Bombers, Lethbridge Bulls, Regina Red Sox, Medicine Hat Mavericks, Melville Millionaires, Moose Jaw Miller Express, Okotoks Dawgs, Swift Current 57’s, Weyburn Beavers and Yorkton Cardinals.

Petersen is the second UFV player to sign with a WMBL in the last 10 days. Slugger Riley Jepson will head to Lethbridge this summer.

Petersen is a six-foot-three righty who is heading into his third year with the Cascades.

He started six games for UFV in the Canadian Colleges Baseball Conference in 2018, winning two with a 7.15 earned-run average, 19 strikeouts and 18 walks.
