Thunderbirds put up fight, but fall to Cougars

They held the league’s highest scoring team to a combined four goals over two games, but the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds managed just a single point for their efforts.

The Thunderbirds record sits at 8-5-2-1, a fifth-place tie in the BC Major Midget Hockey League.

Fraser Valley was riding a four-game winning streak but managed just a 3-3 tie and a 1-0 loss to the league-leading Cariboo Cougars, who entered the weekend averaging 5.2 goals per contest.

Both games were played at the Abbotsford Centre on Saturday and Sunday.

The Thunderbirds went ahead 3-2  early in the third period in the opener on Justin Hargreave’s second goal of the game but the Cougars pulled even six minutes later.

Brodi Stuart had the other Fraser Valley goal while Jayden Genberg had assists on all three goals.

The rematch was scoreless for the first 53 minutes before the Cougars scored the lone goal.

Chad Cromar was in goal for both contests for the T-Birds.
