Thiessen leads field in round one of Fred Wellsby Tour

Twenty nine golfers hit the links at Kinkora Golf Course in the first round of the 2013 Optimist Fred Wellsby Golf Tour.

Mitchell Thiessen had the best score of the day as the Optimist Fred Wellsby Junior Divot Golf Tour teed off at Kinkora Golf Course.

The Chilliwack kid fired a low-gross 59 in round one, earning a one-stroke win over two rivals in the 13-15 year old division.

Mission's Kyle Claggett and Chilliwack's Josh Bamford carded 60s on the par-56 course.

West Vancouver's Andrew Wong shot 63, Mission's Christopher Dale shot 64 and Aldergrove's Jake Dewaal shot 65.

West Vancouver's Laura Wang fired a low-gross 70 to pace the 10-12 year old division, forging a 10-stroke win over runner-up Brian Dale (Mission, 80). Abbotsford's Sher Sidhu was third at 81.

Abbotsford's Tyson Dyck had a phenomenal outing in the nine-and-under division. Dyck carded a low-gross 68, 29 strokes better than Chilliwack's Adam Knodel. Chilliwack's Zak Dekany was third at 112.

The second round goes today at the Cultus Lake Golf Club.

The third round is tomorrow at Abbotsford's Fraserglen Golf Course. The fourth round is Friday at Chilliwack's Cheam Golf Course and the championship round is next Tuesday at Abbotsford's Valley Golf Centre.
