Olafson and UBC swim team target four-peat

Chilliwack Spartan Swim Club grad Carson Olafson is part of a Canada West powerhouse with the UBC Thunderbirds.

Chilliwack’s Carson Olafson guns for gold this weekend at the 2016-17 Canada West Swimming Championships.

Olafson and his University of British Columbia teammates travel to Kinsmen Sports Centre in Edmonton, looking to win the conference title for a fourth straight year.

Olafson, a Chilliwack Spartan Swim Club grad, earned two gold medals last year swimming on UBC’s 4x100 and 4x200 metre freestyle relay teams.

He is a Chilliwack secondary school alum and is in his second year at UBC studying Kinesiology.

His Thunderbirds are expected to battle the Calgary Dinos for the championship.

The Canada West powers have combined to win the last 23 women’s titles and the last 20 men’s titles outright.

The last team other than UBC to Calgary to win an outright conference title was Alberta, dating back to the 1992-93 season.

The meet opens today (Friday) with heats beginning at 4 p.m. The event continues through Sunday, with finals slated to start at 3 p.m.
