Losing skid hits seven as Chiefs suffer Island sweep

The Chilliwack Chiefs went 0-for-3 on a weekend road trip to the coast, losing games in Powell River, Nanaimo and Alberni Valley.

Another tough weekend saw the BCHL Chilliwack Chiefs go 0-3 against Vancouver Island opponents.

The Chiefs hit the road Friday, taking on the Powell River Kings at the Hap Parker Arena. The Kings got two goals from Curtis McCarrick and singles from Kyle Chatham, Ryan Scarfo and Jarid Lukosevicius in a 5-1 win.

Austin Plevy sniped the lone Chilliwack goal in the game's final minute.

Spencer Tremblay was the goalie of note, stopping 39 of the 44 shots sent his way.

Josh Halpenny got the start Saturday as the Chiefs moved on to Nanaimo. The Chilliwack kid played well, stopping 26 of 27 shots. Devin Brosseau snuck a puck past him in the second period, and Brendan Taylor had an empty netter as the Clippers won 2-0.

Halpenny's good work earned him a second straight start Sunday, with his team playing the Alberni Valley Bulldogs.

Facing the Island division cellar dwellers, Chilliwack experienced another defensive meltdown, losing 7-2.

Mathieu Tibbet's seventh of the year had the Chiefs tied 1-1 through 20 minutes.

But Alberni Valley scored two in the second and pulled away with a four-goal third. Jake Hand had the other Chilliwack goal.

Halpenny went the distance, stopping 42 of 49 shots.

Chilliwack's league-worst record (tied with Trail) sits at 7-22-1-2. They're now 10 points behind the Surrey Eagles for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Mainland division, with no games in hand.

And they've got another tough weekend waiting.

The Penticton Vees are in Chilliwack for a Friday night game at Prospera Centre.

Puck drop is 7 p.m.

The Chiefs hit the road for Saturday and Sunday games against the Spruce Kings of Prince George.
