Last hole heroics give Thiessen win at Maple Juior Tour event

Down one stroke at the 18th hole, Mitchell Thiessen birdied while his opponent faltered at Swan-e-set Bay Resort in Pitt Meadows.

Chilliwack’s Mitchell Thiessen earned a one-shot victory over North Vancouver’s Tyler Leclair at the latest Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour stop.

Both teenagers teed off in heavy rain last Saturday at the Swan-e-set Bay Resort in Pitt Meadows.

Thiessen birdied the second hole and shot 41 through the  front nine. The bad weather forced the golfers into the clubhouse before they could play the back nine.

Back on the course Sunday, Thiessen started strong with a birdie on No. 3.

But Leclair applied pressure by carding birdies on three of the first six holes.

Thiessen trailed by one shot heading to No. 18 and came through with epic clutchiness.

While Leclair struggled to bogey, Thiessen drained a birdie putt to escape with the dramatic win.

It was his first on tour this season.

“I feel amazing after getting a bunch of top fives and a top three,” he said. “It’s nice to put a win in there.”
