Michael Hopwood turned in a field-tilting play for his junior bantam Blue Giants when he recovered an onside kick in the first quarter of a 26-12 championship game win.

Chilliwack’s junior bantam Blue Giants are off to the provincial finals.

The Giants punched their ticket with a dominant 26-12 win over the North Langley Bears in the Valley Community Football League championship game.

The Giants hosted the Bears Saturday at Townsend Park and opened the scoring on the first drive.

Led by bulldozer running back Logan Buchwitz, Chilliwack drove down the field. From the five yard line, No. 88 took a handoff from quarterback Grayson Frick and ploughed straight up the middle to give his Giants a 6-0 lead.

In the dying seconds of the half, it was Buchwitz again.

With 10 ticks on the clock he punched it in from four years out, and Aidan Saunders booted the two-point convert to give Chilliwack a 14-0 half-time lead.

Buchwitz collected his third major of the day coming out of the break, catching a short pass from Frick and rumbling 60 yards to the endzone. Running back Josh Caverly wrapped up the Chilliwack scoring with a three yard touchdown run.

The Bears clawed back with two fourth-quarter majors, but the Giants D closed out the win led by standouts Michael Hopwood and Davies Mitchell.

Chilliwack travels to Langley’s McLeod Athletic Park Dec. 4 to face an opponent to be determined.

The Giants last won a provincial championship in 2010.
