The Prince George Polars traveled a long way for a beat-down, falling 42-12 to the GW Graham Grizzlies in a preseason football game Saturday.

GWG hosted PG at Exhibition Stadium, in their last tuneup game before the start of the AA regular season schedule.

The Grizzlies were led on offense by dual-threat quarterback Colby Bessette, who passed for 91 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 85 yards and a major.

The running back tandem of Jaiden Claassen and Andrew Locke carried the ball for 23 and 34 yards respectfully.

Receivers Liam Dallas and Ashton Young found the end zone for the Grizzlies with Grade 10s Logan Buchwitz and Caleb spanner also factoring into the scoring. On defense, the Grizzlies were led by Locke (nine tackles) and Claassen (eight tackles). Defensive linemen Dhillon Myers and Cooper Middleton each added one sack.

“The boys got behind 12-0 in the first quarter but bounced back and started really rolling by halftime,” said GWG coach Laurie Smith. “Prince George is a big, tough and physical running team and it literally took two quarters to find a way to respond.”

The Grizzlies hit the road for their regular season opener on Saturday, heading to Vancouver Island.

They face the Ballenas Whalers, a Parksville school that is the No. 2 ranked AA team in the province.
