Golfer a Lock to win

Lyndsay Munro and Mitch Lock were the big winners when the University of the Fraser Valley handed out its annual awards on Wednesday evening.

Munro and Lock were named the Cascades’ female and male athletes of the year, respectively.

Munro, a fifth-year defender, led the UFV women’s soccer team on a thrilling run to the Canada West title and a bronze medal at nationals. She earned player of the match honours in victories over Trinity Western and UBC at the Canada West Final Four.

Lock was instrumental in helping the UFV men’s golf team earn silver medals at both provincials and nationals in 2010. The Mission native finished second overall at provincials, and was named the BCCAA’s male golfer of the year.

Sarah Wierks (Chilliwack) and Ravi Singh were named UFV’s rookies of the year. Wierks averaged 10.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game for the Cascades women’s basketball team, and was named to the CIS all-rookie team.

Singh, a defender with the men’s soccer team, earned a starting spot out of training camp and was called upon to mark some of the top scorers in Canada West throughout the season.

Alexa McCarthy (Chilliwack) of the women’s basketball team won the community service award. She’s involved in a number of service initiatives, including the Operation Red Nose program and UFV’s “Shoot for the Cure” fundraiser for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Cascades team MVP awards went to Lock, Munro, Joel Friesen (men’s basketball), Tessa Klassen (women’s basketball), Spencer Landsiedel (men’s rowing), Courtenay Landsiedel (women’s rowing), Josh Atebe (men’s soccer), Aaron Flanagan (men’s volleyball) and Kayla Bruce (women’s volleyball).
