Jessie Gibson is enjoying an outstanding freshman season with the SFU swim team.

Despite an individual win from Jessie Gibson, the Simon Fraser women’s swim team fell short in its dual meet against the Seattle University Redhawks on Saturday afternoon.

Gibson, a Chilliwack Spartans Swim Club alum, claimed top spot in the women’s 200 yard freestyle, breaking the previous SFU dual meet record for the event set by Nicole Cossey back in 2010 (1:52.61), also against the Redhawks.

Gibson set another dual-meet record in the 100 yard butterfly, as the freshman flew to a 56.01 finish, besting the 56.84 mark that Alexandra Schofield set against Pacific University in 2014.

Outside of those victories, and a win for the Clan women in the 400 yard freestyle relay, the 22-event meet was dominated by the host Redhawks, as they took the top spot in the remaining 15 competitions. By the time the team hit the wall for the final length, the scores read 119-84 for Seattle.

The battle between Gibson’s Clan and the Redhawks moves north of the border next week, as SFU hosts Seattle University at the Margaret and Paul Savage Pool on Saturday.
