Former Chilliwack Chief netminder gets ECHL all-star nod

Mitch Gillam’s strong start with the Worcester Railers has earned him a ticket to Toledo, Ohio.

Former Chilliwack Chiefs netminder Mitch Gillam is an ECHL all-star.

The minor pro circuit announced Monday the players who will appear in the 2019 CCM/ECHL All-Star Classic, being played Jan. 21 at the Huntington Centre in Toledo, Ohio.

Gillam, a second year pro, gets the nod after starting the season strong with the Worcester Railers. In 19 appearances, Gillam has posted a 9-9-0-1 record with a 2.63 goals-against average and .924 save percentage.

He was the ECHL Goalie of the Week for the period of Nov. 26 to Dec. 2 and has been called up twice this season to spend time with the American Hockey League’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the top affiliate of the National Hockey League’s New York Islanders.

The Ontario native spent two seasons with Chilliwack’s junior A team (2011-13) and was named the BCHL Goaltender of the Year in 2012-13.

He went on to four successful seasons at Cornell University before turning pro.

– The all-star announcement isn’t the only good news for Gillam, who is also living the ultimate dream of every hockey player this weekend when he gets his own bobblehead.

The first 3,000 fans through the gate for a Saturday game against the Reading Royals will get a ‘Gilly Gilly’ bobblehead.
