Flames score silver at Christian School provincials

The Unity Christian senior boys soccer team went 4-1 at the BC Christian Schools provincial soccer tournament in Langley.

The Unity Christian senior boys soccer team captured silver at the BC Christian Schools provincial tournament, held Friday and Saturday at Langley's Credo Christian High School.

The locals went 3-0 in pool play.

UC downed Highroad Academy 3-2 in penalty kicks, then thumped Kings Christian School 7-1. They finished pool play with a 2-0 shutout win over AA powerhouse Surrey Christian.

Troy Ypma scored both goals in that win.

UC faced another AA powerhouse in Saturday's semi-final, taking on Pacific Academy. Grade 11 goaltender Jon Vugteveen ran his shutout streak to 200 minutes, backstopping the Flames to another 2-0 win. Both goals were scored off Ben VanDyk headers.

The gold-medal match pitted UC against the reigning champions from Credo Christian.

The tired teams engaged in a fierce defensive battle that ended 1-0 in favour of Credo Christian. An unfortunate bounce five minutes into overtime ended the game and stopped Vugteveen's shutout streak at 315 minutes.

UC heads into Fraser Valleys this week, starting off against Meadowridge.

The team hopes to qualify for single A provincials for the second straight year.
