Ex-Chief captain Roberts recognized for academic achievement

The second year defenceman with the Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves is establishing himself as a star in the college classroom.

Former Chilliwack Chiefs captain Eric Roberts is one of the top student-athletes in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA).

Roberts, an Abbotsford native who plays NCAA hockey for the University of Alaska-Anchorage, is one of  22 BCHL alums making the conference’s 2016-17 Scholar-Athlete Award list.

Roberts is in his second season with the Seawolves. He logged 163 regular season games with the Chiefs over parts of four seasons (2011-15).

To earn recognition as a WCHA Scholar-Athlete, Roberts needed to complete at least one year of residency at his current school prior to this year while maintaining a grade-point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale in the previous two semesters.

Zach Diamantoni, who spent the 2013-14 season in Chilliwack was also on the list.

Diamantoni plays at Northern Michigan University.
