Crusaders stomp Surrey for first rugby win

The Chilliwack Crusaders got a hard-charging effort from Loz Davies, who scored twice in a 29-12 triumph at the Yarrow Sports Field.

The Chilliwack Crusaders earned their first win of the spring season last Saturday, defeating Surrey 29-12 at Yarrow Sports Field.

The game opened with hard running by Patrick Gallagher and Kevin Molenaar that ground down the Surrey defense.

Loz Davies capitalized, pounding through for the first try of the match. Alex Van Volsen booted the convert for a 7-0 lead.

With the score tied 7-7 and time ticking down in the first half, rookie winger Josh Hayden chased down a kick deep in Surrey territory and scooted in for his first try in a Crusader uni.

Van Volsen’s convert made it 14-7 at the break.

He booted a penalty kick early in the second half to extend the lead to 17-7 and converted Davies’ second try of the game to put the Crusaders up 24-7.

Fresh legs off the bench got Surrey their second score, but in the dying moments of the game a ball was spun wide to Aaron Zimmer who weaved through a demoralized Surrey squad for the game’s final points.

Davies was an easy choice as forward of the match while Kyle McQuaig’s hard lines and support runs earned him back of the back honours.

The Crusaders have a break before their next game to participate in Vancouver 7’s.

They’ll get back to league action April 1, hosting the Simon Fraser Clansmen B.
