Cornell's Gillam gets rookie recognition

A spectacular NCAA division one debut netted former Chilliwack Chiefs netminder Mitch Gillam a weekly award.

Mitch Gillam made the most of his first shot in the spotlight last week and paid off with an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) rookie of the week nod.

The Chilliwack Chiefs alum and 2013 Coastal Conference MVP won his debut with Cornell University last week.

He stopped 24 shots versus Niagara, and created a sensation when he sailed a shot 180 feet into an empty net to seal the 4-2 victory. Gillam became the first goaltender in Division I history to score a goal in his collegiate debut.

Gilliam is just the third Division I goalie to be credited with a shot on net (the first since 2002) and the eighth goalie to ever be credited with a goal (the first since 2008).
