A red hot round by Langley’s Andy Kim was enough to claim the title at the Chilliwack Golf Club

Chilliwack’s Mitchell Thiessen shot matching rounds of 74 at the Chilliwack Golf Club, finishing one stroke off the lead at last weekend’s Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour 2017 Ford Series opener.

The Sardis secondary school student shook off the winter rust competing against eight golfers in the junior boys group.

Thiessen carded two birdies and four bogies on day one and trailed Langley native Willis Lee by two shots. But it was another Langley teen who caused problems on day two. Andy Kim caught fire, shooting a one-under-par 71, including five birdies, to shoot past Lee and Thiessen into top spot.

Thiessen and Lee ended up tied for second, three strokes ahead of anyone else.

Thiessen is fine-tuning his game in the lead up to the Future Links Pacific Championship, which will be played May 12-14 at the Chilliwack Golf Club. He will test himself against the best junior-aged golfers from across Canada, including athletes from Team Alberta and Team Canada.

Thiessen has secured a golf/academic scholarship that will see him play and study at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, MT this fall.

The Battlin’ Bears play in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Frontier conference.
