Chilliwack’s Jennifer Greggain outlasts Stephanie Wong for PGA of B.C. Women’s title

Greggain out-golfed Point Grey’s Wong over two rounds at the Capilano Golf and Country Club.

Chilliwack’s Jennifer Greggain has won a PGA of B.C. Women’s Championship for a third time.

The Chilliwack Golf Club instructor teed off Thursday and Friday in a two-round tournament at the Capilano Golf and Country Club in North Vancouver.

The field was 95 strong, with all but two of the golfers male.

Greggain shot an opening round 76 and entered round two with a slim one-stroke lead over Stephanie Wong (Point Grey Golf and Country Club).

The women golfed in the same group and by day’s end Greggain walked off with a six-stroke win.

Greggain birdied the first, fifth and 17th holes.

She had nine bogies and two double bogeys, on holes four and six, but Wong struggled worse, carding a 15 over par 87 that included a disastrous nine on the par-four 12th hole.

Still, Greggain was impressed by her foe.

“I was really happy to play with Stephanie. It’s awesome to have new, young players come into the Association,” Greggain said. “I just think the world of her and she’s definitely going to have a nice career here within the PGA of B.C.”

Greggain also had kind words for the Capilano course.

“It was a battle out there,” she said. “It was a very tough golf course and it reminded me a lot of a major championship, which was really fun to grind it out for every single shot you take out there.”

Greggain finished 59th overall.

— Kevin Stinson made a run for the men’s title.

The Cheam Mountain instructor scuffled in round one with a three over par 75.

But he went four under in the second round, finished two strokes off the lead and pocketed $2,066.77.
