Chilliwack hockey star Ethan Bowen is one step closer to playing in the 2017 Western Canada U-16 Challenge Cup.

Bowen is one of 35 players short-listed by Hockey B.C. and has a good chance to represent his province at the tournament, which runs Oct. 17-22 in Calgary, AB.

The four team event will feature the highest rated players from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

The Team B.C. roster will be finalized in early October, with the coaching staff tracking Bowen closely during the first two months of the season.

“After a very competitive provincial camp and thorough evaluation, the B.C. Hockey evaluation team is excited with the players selected to the short list,” said Fred Zweep, B.C. Hockey’s Male Program of Excellence coordinator. “We look forward to watching these athletes in the coming months as we get down to naming Team B.C. this fall.”

The majority of players on the short-list were selected in the Western Hockey League bantam draft last May, including Bowen, who was picked in the second round by the Kelowna Rockets.

Bowen has chosen to take the junior A path over the major junior route, signing with the Chilliwack Chiefs.
