Chilliwack stars help Abbotsford Junior Cardinals in title hunt

Two locals helped their team to a semi-final appearance in the BC Premier Junior Baseball League playoffs.

Chilliwack natives Mike Fitzsimmons and Ryan Burton came up short in their bid for a BC Junior Premier Baseball League championship.

The locals played for the Abbotsford Cardinals in last weekend’s tournament in Whalley.

Their crew opened with back to back wins on Friday, dumping the Okanagan Athletics 7-6 and the Whalley Chiefs 9-8.

But the Cards were pounded into the ground Saturday, falling 15-2 to the eventual champion North Shore Twins. Abbotsford’s title dreams were crushed Sunday with a 7-3 loss to the Athletics in a semi-final.

Fitzsimmons and Burton were reserves during the championship chase.

Fitzsimmons went hitless in five post-season at-bats. He also pitched three innings, giving up four hits and one run with two walks and two strikeouts.

Burton didn’t bat at all. He pitched a third of an inning against the Twins, giving up two runs on three walks.
