Chilliwack Spartan swimmers win big at Hyack Icebreaker meet

The locals combined to win 57 podium placements during the two-day event last weekend.

Chilliwack Spartan swimmers produced 57 top-three finishes at last weekend’s Hyack Icebreaker meet, held at the Canada Games pool in New Westminster.

Bronwen Wheeler had an epic time in the 11-and-under girls group, winning six races. She was first in the 50, 100 and 200 metre butterflies, 50m freestyle, 200m breaststroke and 200m individual medley. Teammate Calli Saunders placed second in the 100m butterfly.

In the 12-13 year old girls group, Emma Evans finished first in the 50m backstroke and 800m freestyle. JiXiang Lee placed third in the 200m IM and Brooklyn Pickford earned double bronze in the 100 and 200m breaststrokes.

Emily De Jager grabbed double gold in the 14-15 year old girls group, winning the 100 and 800m freestyles. She was second in the 50, 200 and 400m freestyles.

Tobyn Smith took top spot in the 200m butterfly, placing third in the 200m backstroke and 400m freestyle.

Mary Rose Jerodico was second in the 100m butterfly and breaststroke and third in the 50m freestyle and 200m IM while Halle Causton finished third in the 400m IM.

In the oldest age group (16 and over girls), Haley Klenk grabbed gold in the 100m freestyle and silver in the 400m freestyle.

Anna Dumont-Belanger was second in the 200m butterfly and backstroke and Sheigh Gaudette placed third in the 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle.

Myles Wheeler won gold in the 16-and-over boys group, leading the field in the 200m butterfly.

He added bronze in the 200m backstroke.

In the same division, Mervin Jerodico placed third in the 50m backstroke while Logan Sparkes swam to second in the 100m breaststroke and 200m backstroke.

James De Jager starred in the 14-15 year old boys division, winning the 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle and 200m IM. He was second in the 50m freestyle and 100m butterfly and third in the 200m freestyle.

Calvin Dumont-Belanger was first in the 400m freestyle and second in the 200m IM. Carter Janzen was first in the 50m breaststroke, second in the 200m breaststroke and third in the 100m breaststroke.

In the 12-13 year old boys division, Niall Johnson snared silver in the 400m freestyle and bagged bronze in the 50, 200 and 1500m freestyles.

The 11-and-under boys group saw Robert Hasell finish first in the 50m backstroke. Erik Rexha led the way in the 50, 100 and 400m freestyles, finishing second in the 200m freestyle.

Christopher Hirch placed second in the 50m butterfly.
