A Chilliwack secondary school grad has earned all-star status in the Canada West football conference.

Brandon Gandire, an alum of the Chilliwack Giants minor football program, snagged a spot at defensive back after a stellar season with the University of Regina Rams.

According to a Rams news release, he started six games at cornerback, registering an interception and three pass breakups with 17 solo tackles.

“Brandon was given the task of covering the other team’s top receiver game in and game out, and in my opinion he was the top corner in the conference this season,” said Rams defensive coordinator Sheldon Gray. “He’s an exceptionally hard worker in both the film room and on the practice field and it’s great to see all this pay off for him this year.”

Before joining the university ranks, Gandire played for the BC Football Conference Westshore Rebels, helping his team win a Cullen Cup as BCFC champs in 2016.

Another player with Chilliwack ties also earned all-star status. Marcel Arruda-Welch played half a season with the BCFC Valley Huskers in 2019 and is now a defensive back with the University of Manitoba Bisons.
