Chilliwack natives Julia Sprott and Sydney Fraess started for the Douglas College women’s basketball team last Saturday, helping their Royals to a 68-65 win over Langara College.

Both players are GW Graham grads in their first season of post-secondary hoops.

Fraess logged 28 minutes against Langara. She had a tough night shooting, hitting on 1-10 from the field for two points, but she contributed in other ways, pulling down five rebounds while producing two assists, five steals and a blocked shot.

Sprott tallied five points in 15 minutes, including a three pointer. She pulled down one rebound and had an assist.

Douglas College is 5-4 overall, fifth in the seven team PACWest standings.

They visit the Camosum College Chargers Friday.

- GW Graham grad Gabe Mannes is getting his hoops career back on track after missing a big chunk of time last season with an injury.

The dynamic guard is logging big minutes with the Columbia Bible College (Abbotsford) Bearcats, making the most of his floortime.

Mannes led his team with 37 minutes played in last Friday’s 101-88 loss to the Okanagan College Coyotes. Mannes shot 12-27 from the field and 13-14 from the free-throw line en-route to a game-high 39 points. He added five rebounds, nine assists and a steal.

Back at it the next night, Mannes played a quieter 39 minutes against the Coyotes, producing eight points on 4-15 shooting.

He did snag six rebounds, with two assists and a blocked shot.

The wins aren’t coming for the Bearcats, who fell to 0-10 on the season, good for last place in the seven team PACWest circuit.

Mannes leads Columbia Bible College into a road battle at Langara College Friday night.
