Sixteen female hockey teams hit the ice in Chilliwack this weekend for Chilliwack Minor Hockey’s Ice Breaker tournament.

The event started on Remembrance Day and continues through Sunday, with games at the Chilliwack Coliseum and Sardis Sports Complex.

Chilliwack has three teams in action, one each in the U11, U13 and U15 age groups.

Visiting groups are coming from as far away as Salmon Arm, Penticton and Nanaimo.

“Chilliwack Minor Hockey Association is committed to growing the game for female players, and this tournament is an important milestone to be celebrated,” said CMHA’s Adam Holek.

Beyond the usual tournament things like raffles and 50/50 draws, Holek said there’s also a tie-in with the Chilliwack Chiefs Friday night home game against the Victoria Grizzlies.

“Discounted tickets are being offered to all participating teams, thanks to the strong partnership between CMHA and the Chiefs,” he said.

Chilliwack Minor Hockey Association has put added emphasis on developing female hockey this season.

“There have been other recent female hockey events we have had in Chilliwack this season, including the Try Hockey event where 43 girls came to an on-ice session in September, as well as the food truck festival courtesy of CMHA,” he noted. “We also held a corn maze team-building event in October to celebrate IIHF World Girls’ Hockey Weekend.

“This weekend’s tournament is just another building block towards increasing opportunities for females looking to play hockey at a fun, but competitive level.”
