Christian Fitzgerald scored a pair of goals, including the overtime winner, as his Surrey Eagles beat the Chilliwack Chiefs by a 3-2 count Friday night.

The BCHL ‘extended training camp’ game between the Mainland division rivals was played at the Chilliwack Coliseum and the Chiefs got off to a solid start.

Nick Cherkowski opened the scoring at 4:08, scoring his third goal in three games.

Brett Rylance doubled the home team’s lead at 9:31.

Rookie Ty Gagno assisted on both Chilliwack goals.

Surrey’s Carter King cut the Chiefs lead in half at 16:53 and Fitzgerald scored in the final minute of the opening frame.

Chilliwack out-shot the visitors 19-9 over the final 40 minutes but couldn’t put another puck past Surrey keeper Thomas Scarfone. Mathieu Caron was equally flawless until Fitzgerald’s goal 4:39 into the first OT period.

The three stars were Fitzgerald (first), Rylance (second) and King (third) with Chilliwack’s Dawson Good the Fortis BC Energy Player of the Game.

The Chiefs are back in action Friday and Saturday with a home-and-home against Surrey.

They’re in Surrey for the opener and back on Chilliwack Coliseum ice for the rematch, with a 7 p.m. start.
