One Chilliwack Chief has been named to a BCHL year-end all-star team.
The junior A league announced its first, second and All-Rookie rosters Wednesday (April 13) with each team featuring three forwards, two defencemen and one goaltender.
Chiefs defenceman Abram Wiebe makes the second team after a breakthrough season that saw him post two goals and 31 points in 54 games. The 18-year-old Mission product was the 12th highest scoring blueliner in the BCHL, and of the players ahead of him, only Penticton’s Ryan Hopkins and West Kelowna’s Tyson Jugnauth, are younger.
All stars were decided through a vote by the league’s 18 team broadcasters.
Other than Wiebe, the Chiefs don’t have any other all-stars, though Cameron Johnson was likely right on the cusp. The 17-year-old was eighth in league scoring with 25 goals and 65 points in 54 games. But with only six forward spots available, that wasn’t quite enough.
The first team all-star forwards are BCHL scoring leader Matthew Wood (Victoria), Simon Tassy (Salmon Arm) and Tyson Dyck (Cranbrook). The defencemen are Jugnauth (West Kelowna) and Clark Hiebert (Victoria) and the goalie is Kaeden Lane (Penticton).
The second-team forwards are Ellis Rickwood (Victoria), Sean Donaldson (Nanaimo) and Josh Nadeau (Penticton). Wiebe is on D along with Matthew Campbell (Coquitlam) and the goalie is Hobie Hedquist (Alberni Valley).
The All-Rookie team features Wood and Dyck at forward along with Cade Littler (Wenatchee). The D-men are Hopkins and Tyler Rubin (West Kelowna) and the goalie is Ajeet Gundarah (Langley).
The Cowichan Valley Capitals, Surrey Eagles, Vernon Vipers, Trail Smoke Eaters, Merritt Centennials, Powell River Kings and Prince George Spruce Kings don’t have any representation.
Still to come are the BCHL’s year-end award winners, which will be announced April 27.
