Chilliwack Chiefs can't catch winning Wenatchee Wild

The Chiefs have won 14 of their last 15 games and have gained ground, but Wenatchee isn't losing enough.

The Chilliwack Chiefs are doing their part to track down first place in the Mainland division standings, but the Wenatchee Wild aren’t helping at all.

The Chiefs won two more games on the weekend, trouncing Salmon Arm 6-3 and Prince George 7-3, but Wenatchee whomped Surrey twice at home (6-0 and 9-1) to maintain their five point lead.

Each team has eight games to play with no head to heads, so Chilliwack needs the Wild to stumble soon.

The Chiefs have won 14 of their last 15.

Friday night saw Jordan Kawaguchi snipe a pair as his team overcame an early two-goal deficit against Salmon Arm.

Gooch’s crew roared back with three in the second period and three more in the third, with Kohen Olischefski, Will Calverley, Colin Bernard and Jake Smith also scoring.

There was no slow start in Saturday’s win over PG. Smith and Bernard scored first period goals and Chilliwack had six on the board before the Spruce Kings got one.

The Chiefs spread the scoring around with Kawaguchi, Ben Fanjoy, Aaron O’Neill, Linden Hora and Cole Poliziani putting pucks past shell-shocked Prince George stopper Aris Anagnostopoulos.

Ex-Chief Tanner Campbell assisted on all three Spruce Kings goals, all scored by Kyle Johnson.

Mark Sinclair was in net for both weekend wins, stopping 13 pucks against Salmon Arm and 37 against PG.

Sinclair’s Chiefs skate into a Wednesday nighter in Coquitlam, facing the cellar-dwelling Express (10-41-1-2) for the final time this season.

The Merritt Centennials (19-20-8-2) are in town Friday night with the Langley Rivermen  (26-16-5-2) stopping by Saturday.
