The University of Victoria Vikes completed a two-game weekend sweep of the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades at Abbotsford's Envision Athletic Centre, winning 73-69 on Friday and 78-72 on Saturday.
Great defence and lethal shooting helped the Vikes win the opener on Friday, and they carried that formula into the rematch.
UVic shot 55 per cent from the field in the opening quarter, opening up a double-digit lead.
The Vikes led by 19 points at halftime, holding the Cascades to just 37 per cent shooting from the field.
UFV came to life in the third quarter, narrowing the gap to eight points. Fifth-year forward Kyle Grewal (Surrey) scored 12 of his 21 points to get the Cascades back into the game.
UFV kept chipping away in the fourth, and with 30 seconds remaining, they were within four.
But UVic's Terrell Evans drained two clutch free-throws to put the game out of reach.
“We played great in the second half. Our offense came alive and we hit key baskets to get back into the game,” said UFV head coach Adam Friesen. “I was pleased with Kevon Parchment's performance tonight, as he led the way with 23 points.”
Parchment played 37 minutes, adding nine rebounds and six assists.
Abbotsford native Nathan Kendall had 12 points and two rebounds.
The Cascades saw their record drop to 2-2 while Victoria's improved to 4-0.
UFV travels to Vancouver to face the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds this weekend.
