Chilliwack native Katherine Holden is getting her first taste of off-the-court activity with the University of the Fraser Valley women's basketball team.

The Cascades have a history of getting involved with various charities.

This month Holden and her new teammates are on a shoe drive, collecting gently used footwear on behalf of Soles4Souls.

Soles4Souls is a non-profit organization which has distributed 26 million pairs of shoes in 127 countries since 2006.

The Cascades are aiming to collect 1,000 pairs of shoes, and they’re already at 200. They hope to add to their shoe haul at tonight's friendly match against the University of Wisconsin Badgers.

Tip off is 7 p.m. at the Envision Athletic Centre in Abbotsford and fans are invited to drop off shoes at a collection bin in the lobby.

The collection bin will be back Friday night as UFV hosts the Florida Atlantic Owls. Admission is free for both games.

“Last year we did a fundraiser for people in third-world countries who don’t have water, and we noticed how far they have to walk to get water,” Claggett said. “By collecting shoes, we’ll be able to help those same people in a different way. The shoes can also be distributed in our own community as well, to help those in need.”
