Basketball Flames impress at Bodwell Classic

The Unity Christian Flames beat two of three opponents at the Bodwell Classic tournament in North Vancouver.

The Unity Christian Flames senior boys basketball team went 2-1 at the Bodwell Classic tournament in North Vancouver.

The Flames opened with a thrilling 63-61 win over St. Johns (Vancouver). Down nine points with three minutes to go, UC went on an 11-0 run to erase the deficit and earn the W.

The Flames dumped Carver Christian 68-28 in their second game.

Missing their captain and leading scorer, Nathan Vugteveen, in game three, UC dropped a 65-61 decision to Duncan Christian. Down 43-22 at halftime, the Flames did well to claw back and make it close.

UC's performance at the tournament should cement their status as the fifth ranked single-A team provincially.

Ryan Billsten, Jason VanWyk, and grade 10 rookie point guard John Vugteveen were all voted tournament all stars.
