Letters: Tapping the power of peace

She gave me a peace sign and a thumbs up, writer says. She was expecting an angry driver and a very different hand gesture.

I was touched by someone’s kindness and I’d like to share the experience.

I was driving on Luckakuck and went to change lanes, thinking it was clear. I didn’t check my blind spot well enough and heard a honk as I went to change.

The car pulled up beside me; the lady made eye contact and shrugged her shoulders.

I mouthed, “I’m sorry.”

She gave me a peace sign and a thumbs up. I was expecting an angry driver and a very different hand gesture. I was completely at fault with what happened and this kind woman defused what could have been a very unpleasant experience.

I’m so grateful to have been the recipient of such a simple, but profound act of forgiveness, kindness, understanding and acceptance.

This woman’s peaceful response made more impact than anger would have. There is power in peace!
