Re: “Canadians need bodily autonomy,” Progress letters, April 8, 2022.

Well Mr. Johnson, give your head a shake. Your letter is wrong on so many counts, not least of those being that the so-called “freedom convoy” was supported massively by “everyday Canadians.”

What “freedom” did you want exactly? The freedom to infect anyone you liked? The restrictions were not only in Canada but across the world. All the world’s leaders – who actually don’t agree on anything else – agreed that restrictions were necessary to stop a virus which, despite your baseless comment, was killing people. It is a well-known fact that COVID-19 can have serious long-term consequences and it is simply not worth the risk.

As a senior, immunocompromised and consequently at great risk of serious problems and even death, I did not support the convoy, nor did anyone else I know. In fact, most people I spoke to were horrified that this would happen in our country. Some of the protesters carried banners proclaiming “this is North Korea” or “this is communism.” If either of those was true, do you think they would have been allowed to protest? It is only because we live in a democratic country that such protests are allowed in the first place. The convoy was led by people who wanted everything their way, and to hell with everyone else. Is that freedom? What about the rest of us – the majority that have accepted that the restrictions, while unwelcome, are nonetheless necessary in order to protect everyone?
