LETTER: ‘Please do not complain about your rights’

‘You have the right to get a vaccine, to wear a mask or not’

I acknowledge that a majority of truckers and the public in general are not whinging. The following is directed at the whinging, minority of people one hears and sees in the news.

If one chooses to work with children in most situations, day care, social activities and vulnerable people one must obtain a police check. This is to protect those who put their trust in a “stranger.”

If one chooses to drive a heavy truck, a taxi, or an ambulance one must obtain a specific driver’s licence to do so. Should one drive a vehicle on public roads one must wear a seatbelt and obey traffic rules. That is just the way it is. One needs a passport to enter Canada and any other country. This is an international demand.

These are simple rules, and one is free to ignore them.

However, if one chooses to ignore them then one forfeits the right to perform the certain tasks. The rules are made for the protection of all people and so it is with, wearing a mask in these times, getting a vaccine and adhering to decrees made by those we have, by convention, asked to look after our welfare; the welfare of all. That is just the way it is.

So, please do not complain about your rights. You have the right to get a vaccine, to wear a mask or not. That is your choice. Not doing so simply restricts what you can do. This is for the good of everyone and is how a just system works.

Tens of thousands of people joined the armed forces at the outbreak of two world wars and the Korean conflict and later died or were horrifically wounded in order to preserve your rights as Canadians. And yet you choose to endanger the lives of your fellow Canadians by refusing to follow the rules all the while whinging about those rights.

For the recidivists among you who feel that it is OK to desecrate national symbols, you are a stain on the fabric of our nation and an affront to the memories of those who died to give you the right to peacefully protest. A right you have abused.

Shame on you.

Finally, to those who whine about not knowing what is injected into one’s body via a vaccine, I wonder if you may be people who smoke tobacco products, consume illicit drugs, alcohol and/or cannabis; things that are known to be hazardous to one’s health? The word hypocritical comes to mind as a descriptor of anyone who does consume any of these yet rejects the science of the vaccines.
