With deep sadness we announce the very sudden but peaceful passing of William Martens.
How can we write the sum of his 82 years of vibrant life? Born and raised in the Alberta prairies, he moved to Chilliwack, BC with his wife Anne in 1949. Here, they established their roots and their home while serving in the church and community.
Bill developed his career as an auto mechanic and a businessman and was well known for his friendly smile, twinkling eyes, and his strong handshakes.
In his spirit of adventure, he enjoyed rodeos and round-ups, flying small aircraft, gardening, cycling and playing an assortment of musical instruments.
He held a strong appreciation for the diversity and beauty of nature, as well as for history and geographical wonders. All these he shared in contagious enthusiasm with his wife, Anne; his four children: Dennis (Karin), Dick (Vicki), Doug (Carolyn) and Kristi (Reinhard); his 10 grandchildren Trevor (Krystal), Kelli, Daelyn, Andrea (Shawn), Rachel, Matthew (Stephanie), Lyndsay, Bryce (Rosanna), Silas and Samuel and one great-grandchild, Linden.
Blessed are we to have been touched by such a beloved husband, a loving father and grandfather.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, William and Sarah Martens; brother, George Martens, and sister Agnes Janzen. He is survived by his siblings, Henry (Mary) Martens, Elsie Janzen, Irvin (Donna) Martens, Sally Eaton and Betty Martens.
A very special thank you to the paramedics from the hospital in Golden, BC, to the staff and management from the Ponderosa Motel and to Sue from Victim’s Assistance – an angel sent by God.
A memorial service in celebration of Bill’s life will be held on Monday, June 15, 2009 at 1:30 pm at Eden Mennonite Church, 46551 Chilliwack Central Road, Chilliwack, BC.
