Wendall BUCKINGHAM

August 31, 2013

Buckingham, Wendall Lloyd. Wendall Lloyd Buckingham was born on Friday, August 4, 1922 at Eburne, Lulu Island, BC. He was the son of Edgar and Elba Buckingham and a brother to Howard, Milfred and Arthur all of whom have predeceased him. He was known as “Uncle Buck” by many of his friends and family. Wendall had just celebrated his ninety-first birthday at La Rosa Gardens in Ladysmith, BC. Wendall’s last day with family and friends was August 31, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joyce Buckingham, nee Standeven. Dad enjoyed a wide and varied career. He was a member of the Canadian Navy during World War II, a member of the Chilliwack city council, a sawyer, millwright, carpenter, contractor, dairy farmer, and father to three children. They are Betty Garnett (Vince), Nancy Dow (Jim) and Lloyd Buckingham (Debbie). He also has fifteen grandchildren and many great grandchildren. Dad was an active member of Rosedale United Church for many years. Wendall and Joyce were married there on October 4, 1946. In later years Wendall discovered the joy of “pasture pool” (golf) and had many years of enjoyment chasing a golf ball around Canada as well as in Arizona and Australia. Curling played a big part of his retired life well into his eighties with competitions including the Canadian Seniors events. Dad also enjoyed playing bridge for many years; daughter Betty was always a reluctant fourth. He was a fierce cribbage competitor and often gave son Lloyd and son-in-law Vince a good trouncing.

Dad maintained his sense of humor right up to the end when he was teasing nursing staff as well as others he met. His life will be celebrated in a memorial service at the Rosedale United Church (51351 Yale Rd East, Chilliwack BC) 2:00 pm, Saturday September 14, 2013. Now as he would so aptly put it, “He has taken the rest of the day off”.
