Steve MAHYR

July 29, 2002

Passed away peacefully on Monday, July 29, 2002 at Chilliwack General Hospital. Steve was born in Sielec, Benkow Ukraine on January 9, 1904.

Predeceased by a son Ronald (1950); and a daughter Lillian (1951). Steve leaves to mourn: His devoted wife of 71 years Sophia; four daughters, Eve Hoare of Victoria, Joyce (Norm) Hooper of Richmond, Arlene (Boyce) Butler of Vancouver, and Rose Nore of Maple Ridge; one son John of Richmond; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Steve emigrated to Canada in June of 1928. He married Sophia in Saskatoon, Sask. on January 17, 1931 and they moved to Agassiz three months later, where Steve obtained work on the railroad. They lived through the war, 1939-1944 and the great flood of 1948. In 1939 Steve began to purchase prime farmland and to build homes and outbuildings - 128 acres on Harrison Hot Springs Rd. - 75 acres on Hammersley Prairie - and ultimately 40 acres on Whelpton Rd.

In 1955 Steve and Sophia sold their farm in Agassiz and moved their family to Chilliwack so that Steve could concentrate his efforts on construction.

During a 25 year span and until his retirement in the 1980s, Steve built three apartment buildings (Arlington, Roselyn, and North Star Apartments), one duplex, and he either built or renovated 58 houses.

He lived a full, rich life and he put a smile on our faces and wisdom in our minds. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the nurses in the Extended Care Unit for their kind and compassionate care to our father and grandfather. Private family service to be held with burial at Little Mountain Cemetery. Funeral arrangements care of Henderson’s Funeral Home, Chilliwack.
