Shirley was predeceased by her parents, her brother Les and her sister Thelma.

Shirley was born on October 3rd 1937 to Emily and Harry Woods in Birmingham England. In the 1930s her Canadian family had gone to England for an extended visit to care for Emily’s ailing mother. Shirley was born there but their return was delayed until 1949 when they settled in Winnipeg Manitoba. Throughout her school years Shirley was an excellent student and always achieved the highest marks. In her final year attending Winnipeg’s Technical Vocational College her teachers deemed Shirley had already mastered the course by mid year. To complete the year she was asked to become the school secretary. The position became available when the former employee left for medical reasons. Shirley and Ian met in 1954 and they were married on October 5th 1957. They took up residence in Gimli Manitoba where Ian was a member in the RCAF. Shirley became employed by the air force at the airbase as the Chief Administration Officer’s private secretary. When Ian’s term was over he took an honourable discharge and they moved to British Columbia in 1960 where their three sons were born. While the boys were young Shirley started a home business offering a typing service for several businesses, many private individuals. and a firm of court reporters. When the boys were older she became involved in Ian’s company ultimately becoming the president of the corporation while Ian was busy with another business he created. Shirley and Ian retired to Chilliwack B.C. in 1996.
