September 12, 1938 - August 7, 2019
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our amazing mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Ruth Adeline Scheller passed away on Wednesday August 7th, 2019 after suffering a massive stroke.
Mom was born September 12th, 1938 in Regina Saskatchewan to Henry and Olga Berner. At that time the family lived on a small settlement in Readlyn, Saskatchewan until they moved to Regina in 1944.Where they farmed in the Pense District. In 1951 the family moved to BC and settled on a small acreage on Corbould Street. Mom graduated from Chilliwack Secondary School in 1956. During this time, she had put down some roots both through school and at Christ Lutheran Church where she was part of an active group of Luther Leaguers and she established some life long friendships. After graduation the family moved back to Regina where mom completed her business education and worked for the Government of Saskatchewan, but that didn't last long. Before heading back to Saskatchewan she had met dad in BC and decided to make the move back to be with him. They were married in 1959. Mom stayed at home with Pat and Marilyn while they lived in a small house behind dad's business, Chilliwack Auto Radiator Repair. Mom ventured back into the work force in 1969 and started a 30 year career at the Chilliwack Progress. During this time the family grew again when Sandra was born. Mom worked at the Progress until her retirement in 1999.
In 2007, Dad sold his business and retired. They now had the time to enjoy life, travel and spend time with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There was an abundance of camping trips and road trips to the prairies in their motor home with their granddaughters. They also enjoyed taking the motor home in the winter months, just the two of them, down south to the warmer climate of Yuma.
Mom was a caring, loving devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who always gave of herself and never asked for anything in return. She taught us many valuable lessons in life and about life and we thank you for that.
She had many friends in her church community and it has truly showed how much she meant to all of you with the prayers and words of kindness and thoughts that the family has received from all of you.
Ruth was predeceased by her parents Henry and Olga Berner and her brothers Ernie and Walter Berner. Her infant son, as well as her husband Clarence Scheller in February 2015.
Left to remember her smiling face and her love of life are her daughters, Pat McRae (Dave Adams), Marilyn Ward, and Sandra (Eric) Underhill. Granddaughters, Afton (Mat) Norman, Crystal (Eric) Alekson, Stacie Ward and Adeline and Emma Underhill, Great grandchildren, Cara Norman, Drew, Allyssa, Ethan Ward, Dexter and Alexander Alekson and Chloe Scott and Harlend Gray.
She will also be greatly missed by her younger brother Mervin (Darlene) Berner. As well as many other family members and friends in BC and Saskatchewan.
Thank you to Dr. Mark Ballard, Dr. Ritesh Parekh and the nurses in ICU during mom's initial care after her stroke. And a special thank you to Dr. Lisa Legresley for her continued care for mom and us during this difficult time.
The family would also like to express their deepest thanks to all the nurses in Nursing Unit 5 North for looking after mom so well and the family in her last few days here with us.
