Ruby Edith EASSON

February 11, 2004

Ruby Edith Easson passed away February 11, 2004 at Chilliwack, just after her 89th birthday. She was born February 3, 1915 in Winnipeg, Man.

Ruby is survived by her son, Ian; and her stepson Malcolm.

Her husband Bill and her daughter Elizabeth-Anne (Lan) predeceased her.

She will be missed.

At her request, there was no service.

Ruby spent her life caring for others, first as a nurse and then as an international volunteer. She got her nursing degree in the late ‘30s. She met and married William Easson at the end of the War. They moved to Ocean Falls, B.C. and had two children, Lan and Ian. In 1958, they moved to Chilliwack, where Ruby was instrumental in setting up the extended care unit, where she also worked as a nurse.

She had to retire early due to arthritis. The death of her daughter Lan from leukemia in 1967 also affected her deeply.

In the 1970s, she and Bill did a lot of travelling abroad, which stimulated her interest in world affairs. So, after Bill’s death in 1977, she plunged into international aid work. This involved providing books and consulting on setting up health facilities. Her aid work at this time took her to many countries, including Cuba and Nicaragua.

By the ‘90s, her worsening arthritis led her to be placed in the same extended care unit she had worked in before. With her in the same unit was her mother Dora, who was to die later at age 107.
