February 29, 1928 - September 30, 2019
It is with deep sadness that the family of Roy Newton announces his peaceful passing on Sept. 30, 2019, at Waverly Seniors Village in Chilliwack at the age of 91.
Roy was born in Vancouver on Feb. 29, 1928 to Alun and Mamie Newton. His family relocated to Belfast, Northern Ireland when Roy was three years old, and he spent his childhood and teenage years there. He moved back to Vancouver at the age of 19, making the long voyage across the Atlantic in 1947.
Soon after he met the love of his life, Joy Calvert, and their future began. They were married on May 5, 1950 in Vancouver and briefly lived in Kamloops before settling down in Chilliwack, where they raised their children and had a wonderful life together. Roy was very much a people person and this benefited him greatly in his retail and sales career, which included owning Newton's Superette and Newton Hay Sales.
Roy is survived by his children, Marnie, Steve (Dawn) and Julie (Oliver); grandchildren Jeff, Kimmy, Jessa, Tess, Kylie and Daniel; great granddaughter Jordan; sisters-in-law Bernie and Sheilagh; and several nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by Joy, his beloved wife of 68 years, son Danny, brothers Trevor, Basil, Lyle, and Cyril, brother-in-law Jack, and many dear friends.
Roy truly was a shining light and will be missed by all who knew him. He was a devoted family man and the love and support he gave us all throughout the years will be cherished always.
Our family would like to thank Dr. David Esau and the nurses and caregivers at the Waverly for their compassion and special care of Roy over the past five years.
