1923 – 2004
Richard passed away peacefully surrounded with the love of his family, July 17, 2004 in Chilliwack at the age of 81.
Born in Cupar, Sask., he was the first of three children born to Frank and Gladys Hesketh, brother to Florence and William.
After high school graduation and two years at the University of Saskatchewan Richard enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1943. After serving in World War II he received his discharge in 1947 as Lieutenant, RCN (R) and returned to the U. of S. for his Bachelor of Arts and teacher education degree. Richard also attended Dalhousie University in Halifax for one year.
In 1949, he met his wife of 49 years, Rita Clunie on the steps of the United Church in Chilliwack. Richard enjoyed a long and rewarding 33-year career in education. He retired in 1983 and after Rita’s retirement in 1986, traveled extensively around the world hosting tours with Rostad of Calgary.
Richard was very active in his community throughout his life. He was chairman of the CDTA (Chilliwack District Teachers’ Association), President of the Retired Teachers’ Association, Governor of Kinsman, member of Rotary, Coordinator for the Provincial Emergency Program, Committee member of the Citizens Advisory of the Kent Institution, and he also chaired the United Church Council.
Richard is lovingly remembered by his sons Robert, Ronald (daughter-in-law, Cathy Weseen, grandsons, Brandon and Matthew), Randall, and daughter Rae Anne.
A memorial celebration of this special man’s life will be held on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Chilliwack United Church, 45466 Yale Rd. Ministers Doug Ireland and Doug Chisholm (nephew) officiating.
Richard touched the hearts and lives of many in the educational field and contributed greatly to his community. He stands as an example of what can be accomplished by dedication, honesty and respect. He is deeply missed.
