WARKENTIN, Peter

March 2, 1924 - October 18, 2016

It is with sadness that the family of Peter Warkentin announce his death. Peter died in the Chilliwack Hospital with his wife Rosalea at his bedside. He was born in the Mennonite settlement of Blummenort Russia and immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1926. He grew up in Rosemary AB and farmed in Lacombe before coming to Chilliwack in 1946 buying a small farm on McSween Road. He started working on construction following the flood of 1948 and built several homes of his own. He drove feed truck for Roger's and Boyd's for 15 years, then he obtained a contract with the Chilliwack Post Office and for 10 years was known as Pete the parcel postman. He also drove the furniture truck for Sears (Downtown). Peter often said he had been a delivery boy most of his life and over the years always enjoyed meeting the people he had served. In 1981 he went to work for Westform Metal until illness forced his retirement in 1992. Peter enjoyed helping people and over the years he demonstrated this by his service as an Elder at Cooke's Presbyterian Church and a past Noble Grand of the Chilliwack Oddfellow Lodge Excelsior #7. Peter is survived by his wife of 40 years Rosalea, daughter Shirley (Pat) Gallichan of Surrey, son Ken (Debbie) Warkentin of Winnipeg and step-daughter Venetia (Len) Cherry of Port Alberni. Niece Wendi (Mike) Prinse of Chilliwack and brother John (Julia) Warkentin of Campbell River, 10 grand children and 9 great grand children. He was predeceased by his wife Anne (Tetz) in 1965, Ken's mother Evelyn, daughter Darlene Matthews, stepson Raymond Lajeunesse, grandson Edwin Lajeunesse and stepdaughter Gisele Rollheiser. A Memorial Service will be held at Henderson's Funeral Home on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
