STRYKIWSKY, Peter

Passed away peacefully on November 28, 2016 in Chilliwack Hospital. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Zollinger and her husband Rene, his daughter Marieann Van Leeuwen and her husband Dan, as well as his grandchildren Alexander Ralph (AJ) and Noah and Moriah Van Leeuwen. He was predeceased in 2009 by his wife Jean of 58 years, the love of his life and his granddaughter, Jennifer Ralph (1990), his brothers William and John (Strike) and sister Mary Calsbeck. Peter was born in Norquay, Saskatchewan on February 5, 1926 to Pauline (Bonahowski) and Metro Strykiwsky. His work with the CNR brought him to live in many small towns in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario. In 1980, after 24 years in Thunder Bay, he moved to Chilliwack. Peter was a very social person and loved being surrounded by his family, particularly his grandchildren, and his many friends. Meeting with his coffee group at Tim Horton's, A&W or McDonalds was something he looked forward to. Peter was passionate about boxing and took it up for a short period of time in his youth. He continued to follow it throughout his life as well as hockey and baseball (particularly the Toronto Blue Jays). Peter was a great fisherman (fish was one of his favourite meals), and took great care in nursing his vegetable and flower garden, always one of the best around. His talents also reflected in his hobbies and crafts such as woodworking, carpentry, leather crafting, cooking, baking, canning, and more recently, needlework & cross stitch. Those who had the privilege of knowing Peter knew of his easy-going, calm, good natured and patient manner, great sense of humour and his keen memory, particularly for telling stories of years gone by with such eloquent detail. The family extends their sincere thank-you to the medical staff at Chilliwack General Hospital, 5 North, who took such great care of Peter and showed him compassion and kindness. Viewing will be held on Friday, December 9, at the Henderson Chapel at 45901 Victoria Street, Chilliwack from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 10th at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, 8909 Mary Street, Chilliwack at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at Chilliwack Cemetery, off Yale Avenue, Chilliwack. A lunch will be served at St. Mary's Catholic Church annex hall following interment. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.

Love you Dad, Grandpa and Papa. You will always be in our hearts.

Barbara, Marieann, Rene, Dan, AJ, Noah and Moriah.
